Are you receiving your rates rebate?
Cumulatively, over the last three years, the average rates hike is an incredible 34.52 percent. Over the same timeframe, inflation has been just 13.7 percent. Ironically, Stats NZ has cited council rate hikes as a key driver of inflation and the cost of living crisis we are in the middle of. Many pre-retirees don’t realise that they may be entitled to a rates rebate. And what is even worse many retirees are missing out on this rebate. Although your rebate is likely to be less than the annual increase your Councilor's think are necessary (to fund their many unnecessary pet projects), every little bit helps when the wallet is being squeezed from all directions. The size of your potential rebate depends on four things: your gross income, your rates bill, whether you have dependents, and if you have a SuperGold card or not. The government provides an online calculator (Click here to View) to help estimate your entitlement.
